Dollar Store Review - Kin Dee Thai Noodles

As a change from the Ramen noodles that I often get, I thought I would try out something that has appeared recently in a local dollar store, Kin Dee Thai Noodles. The flavour I tried was the Roasted Garlic, though there are a couple other flavours available.

The noodles came in a kit which contained a rectangular plastic container with a lid, a packet of noodles, an oil packet, a packet of flavouring and a plastic fork. After unpacking everything, preparation was simple; the noodles were taken out of their plastic bag and put into the container, then boiling water was added. After five minutes the noodles were ready and the oil and flavoring were added.

I found the flavour didn't quite taste as garlic. In fact the flavour was overpowered by the spicy heat. It wasn't unbearably hot, but I found by the time I was finished my lips were tingling as if I had eaten chili peppers. The heat isn't totally unexpected since it is Thai, and it would probably be considered mild for Thai food. But it tended to overtake the other flavours. I also was bothered by hard bits of what were probably garlic throughout the noodles that came from the dry flavour packet. My guess is that these were intended to rehydrate but didn't.

Overall, I didn't find the flavour distasteful, just a little hotter and not quite as garlicy as I expected. Yet the noodles themselves were decent and might have been better without the dry ingredients. Those who like the quick Ramen noodles would probably like the Thai noodles. I would rate it about a three out of five.
